Sony Partner Startale Introduces U.S. Dollar Stablecoin on Soneium

Startale Group, the blockchain company working with Sony on its Web3 network Soneium, has launched a new U.S. dollar–pegged stablecoin.

The token, called Startale USD (USDSC), is designed to act as Soneium’s primary digital dollar for payments, rewards, and other on-chain activity, according to a Wednesday press release. Soneium itself is an Ethereum layer-2 network created last year by Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture between Sony Group and Startale.

The launch comes as Japan accelerates its move toward digital currencies. Stablecoins—now a $300 billion asset class linked to traditional currencies—are increasingly seen as a viable payment option. Regulators in Japan have already approved pilot stablecoin programs from major banks, including MUFG, SMBC, and Mizuho. Sony Bank, which became an independent entity earlier this year, is also expected to issue its own stablecoin in 2025.

USDSC is built using infrastructure from M0, a startup developing modular systems for programmable stablecoins. M0 has previously collaborated with MetaMask and Stripe on similar projects.

Startale CEO Sota Watanabe said the initiative aims to make Web3 experiences more intuitive. “It powers payments, rewards, and everyday transactions,” he said.

The stablecoin debut follows Startale’s recent partnership with SBI Holdings to build a 24/7 digital asset exchange for tokenized products.
